Various organizations have demanded unconditional release of United Naga Council (UNC) president Gaidon Kamei and information secretary S. Stephen, arrested on November 25 by Manipur police.
NH: Naga Hoho media cell while condemning the action of Manipur government said that the move to defend the ancestral lands and rights of the Nagas cannot be construed as illegal.
Rather, it asked the Manipur government to ensure that peace and tranquillity prevail in the region instead of provoking the situation which may further aggravate among the common people. The hoho further appealed Government of India to intervene immediately “as the communal Manipur government is waging war against Naga people”.
NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has vehemently condemned the “undemocratic move of Manipur government” in arresting UNC president Gaidon Kamei and info & publicity secretary Sankhui Stephen Inpui.
In a press note, NSF president Subenthung Kithan and general secretary Boveio Poukai Duo demanded immediate and unconditionally release of the UNC leaders. NSF said if the leaders are not released, the situation may get worst and Manipur government would be responsible for any eventualities.
It reminded Manipur government that UNC represents the voice and the sentiments of Nagas in Manipur.
Stating that Manipur government under the chief ministership of Ibobi Singh was not serious on any of the demands made by the Naga people, NSF accused Ibobi of using the Naga issue for his own political mileage by creating huge communal tension among the various communities living in Manipur.
It further asked Manipur government “to stop playing divisive politics and create communal disharmony among the various ethnic communities”.
NWU: Naga Women’s Union (NWU) expressed strong resentment on the arrest of the UNC leaders and accused Manipur government of ignoring the sentiments of the people.
“NWU shares the immense suffering and hardships which have been inflicted upon common people due to the issue of creation of new districts and protest with economic blockade against the proposals” publicity wing said.
Therefore, NWU demanded unconditional release of the UNC leaders and called upon Manipur government to initiate dialogue between the UNC and State government by including central government as third party on the issue for amicable solution. It may be noted that UNC had imposed the blockade from November 1 protesting against plans to create Sadar Hills district by usurping the “lands of the Nagas”.
