Aghunato Area Union, Kohima (AAUK) has condemned the killing of an alleged extortionist by the Police anti-extortion squad at Kohima on June 23.
In a press release, AAUK chairman Khehoto Achumi and general secretary, Mughato Yeptho stated that while the union appreciated the service of the Police personnel in maintaining law and order, it maintained that the alleged extortionist could have been apprehended, avoiding loss of life.
Pointing out that crucial information regarding the sources of the involvement in underground cadres or otherwise with any criminal gang operating in the name of national workers/organizations could have been obtained, the AAUK stated that this information would have been crucial to the law enforcement agency.
While asserting that it would continue to strive for a just and equitable society, the union urged the competent authority to sanction a judicial enquiry into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident so as to arrive at logical conclusion and make public the finding of the committee.
Further, AAUK expressed gratitude to those that extended humanitarian hand towards the family of late Khehuto Assumi.
