The president of the Nagaland Athletics Association (NAA), Abu Metha was elected to the prestigious post of Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the tenure 2025-2029 at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the elections of the AFI.
The election was held on Tuesday in Chandigarh.
A press release issued by honorary secretary Nagaland Athletics, Mhonsao Ngullie informed that this is the second tenure of Abu Metha in the AFI, where he will be holding an elected post of the AFI executive body. In the previous tenure, he was holding the post of Associate Vice President which is an appointment under the AFI constitution.
It may be noted that under his leadership, India hosted the South Asian Cross Country Championships in Kohima, which also coincided with the 56th National Cross Country Championships. It was at these championships that the Nagaland Women’s team won the silver medal in the team event. The Nagaland Athletics team also won the best performing association at the North East Olympics in Meghalaya where Nagaland Athletics won the most number of medals for Nagaland.
Abu Metha has carried out several responsibilities and duties in exemplary manner including being the Indian team leader at the World U-20 Championships in Kenya. He was a member of the Indian officials and observers’ delegation to the Paris Olympics 2024. He represented India at the World Cross Country Congress in Thailand.
The Nagaland Athletics has congratulated Abu Metha and extended sincere appreciation to the entire AFI fraternity and members for electing Abu Metha to this prestigious post and also extended its congratulations to the newly elected body which is to be led by the newly elected president Bahadur Singh Sagoo.
NAA wished the new AFI team a successful tenure with the confidence that India will continue to rise as a sporting powerhouse.
