NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon has stressed the need to increase local pig production, pointing out that Nagaland currently depends on outside supply for nearly 50 per cent of its estimated daily pork requirement of 64,000 kg.
He was speaking at the inauguration of Piggman franchise store “Tender Hygienic Pork” by Symbiotic Foods Pvt. Ltd. at CANSSEA Building, Middle Bayavu, Kohima on Tuesday, marking the brand’s entry into the state capital.
The outlet, inaugurated in the presence of franchisee partner Sentiyala Panger of Renjet Enterprise, Piggman CEO and co-founder Manoj Kumar Basumatary and others, offers a range of hygienically processed pork products including curry cut, spare ribs, pork ham boneless, Boston butt, pork chops, pork intestine and innards. Kikon congratulated the promoters, describing the venture as a strong example of entrepreneurship in a sector with significant demand. He encouraged Naga youth to explore business opportunities, noting that avenues in the government sector had reached saturation.
Basumatary, briefing on the Piggman brand, said it is built on traceability, scientific pig rearing, vaccination protocols and quality-controlled production. He assured that products are processed under hygienic conditions without preservatives or artificial colourants.
He added that the franchise model is designed to provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs, including women, to tap into Nagaland’s large pork market with brand support and scientific breeding assistance. The company has already opened 11 outlets across Assam and Nagaland and plans further expansion across the Northeast.
A former banker turned entrepreneur, Basumatary has advanced scientific pig farming through improved breeds, farmer training and supply chain development, promoting a farm-to-table approach to support rural livelihoods and the local economy.
