The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Longleng, Alongdhimen Jamir, has issued a formal notification against the unlawful dumping of animal carcasses, including pigs and other livestock, at the Longleng Town Council (LTC) Municipal Dumping Site. The directive follows reports of growing public health risks and environmental degradation resulting from improper waste disposal practices.
According to a DIPR report, the disposal of animal carcasses in open or undesignated spaces poses serious threats, including contamination of nearby areas and the potential spread of disease.
Such practices violate established health and safety norms and have prompted immediate administrative intervention.
The notification underscored guidelines from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which mandate scientifically approved methods such as incineration or deep burial for carcass disposal.
These protocols are aimed at minimizing health hazards and protecting the environment.
The directive also refers to legal provisions under the Environment Protection Act and the Solid Waste Management Rules laid out by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
Under these regulations, carcasses are categorized as either “hazardous waste” or “bio-medical waste” depending on the situation and must be treated and disposed of accordingly.
In view of the violations and potential consequences, the Additional Deputy Commissioner has strictly prohibited individuals or groups from disposing of animal carcasses at the municipal dumping site or any open location within Longleng’s town limits.
The notice further warned that violators will face legal action under applicable laws.
