DIMAPUR: Adivasi Catholic communities in and around Kohima came together on Sunday, September 27, 2026, to observe their traditional harvest festival Karam.
The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Rev. Fr. Manohar Dungdung, SDB, parish priest of St. Maria Goretti Church, Sechii Zubza. The solemn service included Scripture readings, Penitential Act, offertory procession and Communion, with a large number of faithful participating in devotion and gratitude to God for the harvest.
Rev. Fr. C. Joseph, counsellor of St. Joseph’s College, along with Rev. Sisters from LFS and Jotsoma, attended as invited guests. They appreciated the community for preserving a festival that carries profound cultural, ecological and social significance across central and eastern Indian states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Assam, as well as parts of Nepal and Bangladesh.
Celebrated primarily by Adivasi and indigenous communities including the Munda, Oraon, Santhal, Ho and Kudmi, the festival goes beyond religious rituals to shape local lifestyle, ecology and social harmony.
The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal, strengthening bonds of unity and thanksgiving among the faithful.
