An Adult Literacy Campaign was launched at Yanthamo Village under Wokha district on August 6 under the PRI-CDO convergence initiative. The programme is spearheaded by Zukhumki Federation NSRLM, Chukitong Block, in collaboration with the District Administration, Department of School Education, and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW).
The campaign commenced with the introduction of night classes, enrolling 30 adult learners. Classes will be held twice a week—every Tuesday and Friday—with the aim of equipping participants with basic reading, writing, and the ability to sign their names.
Delivering the keynote address, SDO (Civil) Wokha, Echungbemo Erui, stated that “learning has no age limit” and encouraged villagers to embrace literacy as a tool for empowerment. He remarked that being able to write one’s name and signature not only builds confidence but also enables individuals to access government schemes and opportunities. He called on community leaders, church bodies, and the village council to extend full support to the initiative, stressing that development requires collective effort.
Senior SDEO Wokha, Raphel Zubonthung, also addressed the gathering and urged the community to take full advantage of the campaign. He cited the success of a similar night class in Tsungiki and expressed optimism for similar outcomes in Yanthamo, noting that participants will receive certification upon completion.
Merithung Patton, Gender Specialist from DHEW, highlighted the objectives of Mission Shakti and shared ongoing efforts to promote literacy and gender inclusivity across all age groups.
Newly enrolled learners expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to pursue education. Many shared their aspirations of becoming literate and thanked the officials for supporting their learning journey.
Village leaders, including the Village chairman of Yanthamo, voiced strong support for the campaign, recognising its potential to bring long-term benefits to the community. The Block Program Manager of NSRLM encouraged all village-based organisations to actively participate and contribute towards building an informed and empowered society.
