AFI holds key meeting with district bodies

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), as part of its Annual General Meeting in Kohima, held an interaction with district athletics associations of Nagaland to strengthen grassroots development and institutional coordination on April 16.
Representatives from all district associations across the state participated in the meeting, which served as a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas between the national federation and local stakeholders. Discussions centred on restructuring and strengthening district bodies, conducting regular grassroots competitions, and expanding AFI’s education and certification programmes for coaches and technical officials.
The session emphasised capacity building, standardisation of practices, and the creation of a strong talent identification and development system across Nagaland.
The meeting was addressed by President of the South Asian Athletics Federation Lalit Kumar Bhanot; Bahadur Singh; Adille Sumariwala; and Abu Metha. The speakers highlighted the importance of inclusivity, grassroots engagement, and the role of athletics in promoting youth development and national integration.
In a parallel initiative, AFI delegates visited the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home under its community outreach programme. The delegation interacted with children and local residents, distributed gifts, and shared words of encouragement.
The outreach was led by renowned athlete Anju Bobby George, a Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee, along with other athletes and officials. Their presence inspired the children, reinforcing values of discipline and perseverance through sport.
Coinciding with the visit, the orphanage marked its 53rd Foundation Day. Members of the Sunshine Orchestra, mentored by A. R. Rahman, presented musical performances, while Neibanuo, caretaker of the home, delivered a note of appreciation.
The engagements reflect AFI’s continued efforts to strengthen athletics at all levels while contributing to social development through community-oriented initiatives.
