Aftercare in rubber plantations: The foundation of a healthy and productive rubber plantation

The success of a rubber plantation is determined not only by proper planting but also by the quality of aftercare provided during the immature phase. Aftercare comprises a series of scientific management practices carried out from planting until the trees reach tappable maturity. These operations ensure better survival, vigorous growth, optimum girth development, and early attainment of tapping standards. In an era of climate variability, prolonged dry spells, erratic rainfall, and increasing temperatures due to phenomena such as El Nino, aftercare has become even more critical. Proper aftercare conserves soil moisture, protects young plants from environmental stress, minimizes losses, improves soil fertility, and enhances long-term productivity, making rubber cultivations more sustainable and profitable, thus ensuring a longer economic life span of the plantations
Key Aftercare Practices:

  1. Vacancy Filling
    Maintaining the recommended plant population is essential for obtaining maximum yield from a rubber plantation.
  • Dead, weak, diseased, or poorly growing plants should be replaced as early as possible.
  • Advanced planting materials like polybagged plants are preferred for replacement.
  • Early vacancy filling ensures uniform growth throughout the plantation.
  • Delayed replacement results in uneven tree growth, poor canopy development, and lower productivity because younger replacement plants lag behind the originally planted plant population.

  1. Mulching
    Mulching is the practice of covering the soil around young rubber plants with organic materials such as dried leaves, grasses, crop residues, or other biodegradable materials.
    Benefits
  • Conserves soil moisture during dry periods.
  • Reduces evaporation losses.
  • Maintains a favourable soil temperature.
  • Suppresses weed growth.
  • Prevents soil erosion.
  • Improves soil structure as the mulch decomposes.
  • Adds organic matter and nutrients, thereby improving soil fertility.
    Mulching should preferably be carried out after the rainy season before the onset of winter or dry season so that soil moisture is adequately stored.
  1. Shading
    Young rubber plants are highly sensitive to intense sunlight and heat.
    During the first year:
  • Artificial shade is provided using plaited coconut leaves, palm leaves, or gunny bags or any other suitable material
  • Shade protects tender seedlings from excessive solar radiation.
  • Reduces heat stress and water loss.
  • Prevents scorching and improves survival.
  • As the canopy develops naturally, artificial shading is gradually removed.
  1. Irrigation
    Although rubber is mainly a rainfed crop, young plants benefit greatly from life saving irrigation during prolonged dry spells.

  1. Whitewashing
    From the second year onwards, the exposed brown portion of the stem is to be whitewashed using lime or china clay.
    Purpose
  • Reflects sunlight.
  • Prevents sun scorch.
  • Protects bark tissues from excessive heating and thereby sun scorch
  • Reduces stem cracking during hot summers.
  • Whitewashing is to be continued until the canopy provides sufficient natural shade.
  1. Branch Induction
    An ideal rubber tree should develop branches at a height of 2.5–3.0 meters.
    If natural branching does not occur:
    Branching is induced through leaf cap or leaf folding techniques.
    These methods stimulate lateral bud development. In no case should the apical bud be removed or beheaded

  1. Fire Belts
    Fire is one of the greatest threats to young rubber plantations during the dry season more so in Nagaland due to the burning of jhum fields

  • Fire belts measuring 5–7 meters wide are created before summer.
  • They are established along the plantation boundaries.
  • Dry leaves, grasses, and weeds are regularly removed from these strips.
  • Plantation roads are also cleaned periodically.

  • Protects young rubber plants.
  • Minimizes economic losses.
  1. Cover Crops
    Cover crops are grown between rubber rows primarily to conserve soil and improve soil fertility.
    Common leguminous cover crops include:
    Pueraria phaseoloides, Mucuna bracteata, Calopogonium mucunoides and Centrosema pubescens.

  • Reduce soil erosion.
  • Suppress weeds.
  • Conserve soil moisture.
  • Lower soil temperature.
  • Improve soil organic matter.
  • Fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules.
  • Enhance microbial activity.
  • Improve soil structure.
  • Cover crops establish quickly and provide long-term protection to plantation soils.
    Establishment of Cover Crops
    • Proper establishment ensures rapid ground coverage.
    • Establish immediately after land clearing or preferably one year before planting.
  • Both seeds and stem cuttings can be used.
  • Since seeds possess hard seed coats, pre-sowing treatment is recommended to improve germination.
  • Fresh cuttings of 2–3 feet length should be planted during the rainy season.
  • Seeds are mixed with rock phosphate before sowing.
  • Planting is usually done in rows or patches between rubber rows.
    Care after establishment
  • Young cover crops should be protected from weeds for the first 4–5 months.
  • Grazing by cattle should be prevented.
  • Cutting the cover crop for fodder should be avoided.
  1. Intercropping
    The wide spacing between young rubber plants provides an opportunity to cultivate additional during the initial three or four years of the immaturity period.

    Selection depends on: Terrain, Slope, Light availability, Market demand, Slope-wise recommendations, Slope below 5%: Almost all intercrops can be cultivated.
    Slope 5–25%: Select crops requiring minimum soil disturbance.
    Slope above 25%: Avoid intercropping.
    Prefer permanent cover crops to prevent soil erosion.
    Intercrops should always be maintained at least 1.5 meters away from the rubber plant base.
    Common intercrops: Banana, Pineapple, Papaya, Colocasia, Mustard, Upland Paddy, Ginger, Turmeric, Tuber crops, Vegetables, Fodder crops and Medicinal plants.
  1. Disease Control
    Young rubber plants are highly susceptible to fungal diseases, particularly during the rainy season.
    The most serious disease is Phytophthora shoot rot.

  • Drying of affected portions.

  1. Manuring
    Balanced nutrition is essential for vigorous growth and early maturity.
    Fertilizer recommendations should ideally be based on:
    Soil testing, leaf nutrient analysis, site-specific nutrient management ensures efficient fertilizer use and better plant response and organic manures.
    Application of: Farmyard manure (FYM) and Compost helps in: Improving the soil fertility, Increase microbial activity, Enhance water-holding capacity, Improve soil structure and Promote healthy root growth.
    Fertilizer schedules should be adjusted according to:
    Soil type, nutrient status, plantation age, local climatic conditions and proper management practices.
