
With a view to mitigate food security during the pandemic, department of animal husbandry & veterinary services (AH&VS) through NEC project has initiated promotion of backyard poultry farming in the state.
According to a DIPR report, fast growing birds are being reared at the department’s farm to cater the demand of poultry rears.
The current batch scheduled for sale starting from September 5 is targeted for poultry farmers under Phek including Meluri sub-division.
The department has informed that farmers from Kohima, Dimapur & Peren districts who have availed this facility during the earlier batch might also place their requirement in order to maintain continuity of activity.

Demand based delivery would be organised scheduling time and locality intimating the same to all concerned accordingly, the department stated.
The department has informed that general specification of birds included: Fast Growing Low Input Technology Bird for dual purpose (meat & egg type); targeted weigh gain is 2.5 kgs to 3.5 kgs in 2-3 months’ time and 150-170 eggs in a year; currently available stock of growers mixed coloured birds of 31 days old; all birds have been dully vaccinated and overcome the critical period of rearing; concentrate feeding with “grower feed” or partial replacement with kitchen leftover is recommended when rearing under intensive system for early maturity and online consultation services and need based logistic support would also be provided.
Further, the department has informed that SOP protocols should be maintained during the delivery.
