Akum Imlong School (AIS) became the first school in Tuensang district to be declared a Plastic Free School, on December 3, under the initiative of Forest department Tuensang, along with Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) Dimapur.
A press release by office of divisional forest officer, Tuensang, stated that, divisional forest officer (DFO), Dr. C. Zupeni Tsanglai, emphasized on the harmful effects of plastic use on mankind and their surrounding environment. She called upon the students to minimize use of plastic packaging and opt for alternative biodegradable resources.
The DFO further appreciated the efforts taken by the school authority to achieve a plastic free school and expressed hope that this will encourage other schools and colleges in Tuensang to adopt the trend. G. Nath, the headmaster of the school, chaired the program, where he highlighted the ban imposed on plastic use in the form of chips, snacks, sweets etc. which comes in plastic covers within the school premises.
Tuensang Forest Division also installed ten non-plastic dustbins along with banners and name plates in the school campus.
