Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and four others were killed on Wednesday when a private aircraft crashed near the Baramati airport in Pune district.
Pawar was travelling from Mumbai to Pune district to address four rallies ahead of the February 5 zilla parishad elections. The other victims were Captain Sumit Kapoor, who had over 15,000 hours of flying experience, co-pilot Capt. Shambhavi Pathak with 1,500 flying hours, Pawar’s Personal Security Officer Vidip Jadhav, and flight attendant Pinky Mali.
According to a government statement, the Learjet aircraft attempted to land at Baramati amid poor visibility. After executing a go-around, the aircraft was later cleared for landing but failed to give a mandatory “read-back” to Air Traffic Control (ATC). Moments later, it burst into flames at the edge of the runway.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said the aircraft was attempting to land in adverse weather conditions. A read-back is a critical aviation safety protocol in which pilots repeat ATC instructions to confirm proper communication.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has taken over the probe into the crash. The aircraft belonged to VSR Ventures Pvt Ltd, which operates a fleet of Learjet 45, Embraer 135BJ, King Air B200 and Pilatus PC-12 aircraft.
According to Flight Radar data, the aircraft took off from Mumbai at 8.10 am and disappeared from radar around 8.45 am.
Police said it crashed a minute later. There were five persons on board, including Pawar, his PSO, an attendant, and two crew members, a DGCA official said. Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill said the aircraft caught fire after the crash and the occupants were rushed to hospital, where they were declared dead. Pawar is survived by his wife Sunetra Pawar, a Rajya Sabha member, and two sons, Parth and Jay.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several other leaders expressed grief over Pawar’s demise. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who visited Baramati, called Pawar’s death unbelievable and said he had lost a close friend.
Eyewitnesses said the aircraft appeared unstable before crashing and exploded on impact, erupting into flames.
The Maharashtra government announced a three-day state mourning till January 30, with the national flag flown at half-mast. Pawar’s last rites will be held with full state honours on Thursday at Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati at 11 am. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah are expected to attend.
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar visited the crash site and the medical college, while Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule was inconsolable over her cousin’s death.
