To mark 60 years of public service broadcasting in Nagaland, Akashvani Kohima, formerly All India Radio (AIR), organized an exhibition at Kisama, showcasing decommissioned antique broadcasting gadgets on Wednesday.
AIR Kohima was established on January 4, 1963, while HPT (Zubza) was set on November 14, 1972, with a Studio at PR Hill on November 6, 1976 and then FM Tragopan on October 2, 2017, the radio has played a prominent role in serving 88% of Nagaland’s population through Medium Wave (MW) and Frequency Modulation (FM) stations.
Programme executive, Akashvani Kohima Rachel Shimray highlighted radio’s continued significance, especially in rural areas, aiming to raise awareness about its evolution. Further commenting on end goal to create more awareness among the about the evolution of radio.
The exhibition at Kisama at the Akashvani kiosk featured a collection of antique radio equipment, including a 1940s rotary dial telephone and a 1970s vintage radio receiver. Newer equipment like the Nagra portable digital recorder and Sonifex digital recorder was also on display.
Akashvani Kohima has earned several National Excellence Awards, recognizing achievements in musical production, technical excellence, and program maintenance. Currently there are 7 radio stations and 12 transmitters including MW-1 and FM-11 as noted
