DIMAPUR: Aghunaqa Kukami Kuqhakulu (AKK) has condemned the alleged harassment, intimidation and abuse of a family from the Aghunaqa area by two Assam police personnel in Assam on July 17, and demanded a fair inquiry and strict action against those responsible.
In a press release, AKK president Kughato Awomi and general secretary Hetoi Katy alleged that the incident occurred around 12 noon between Naojan and Pulibagan (Highway Tina), where two police personnel riding a scooty stopped the family’s vehicle. According to AKK, the policemen allegedly appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and used abusive and insulting language against the family. AKK also claimed that when the victim attempted to record the incident on a mobile phone, the officers allegedly became more aggressive and threatened him.
Further, AKK alleged that the policemen made provocative remarks, including claiming that Nagas had occupied Assam land, threatened to kill Naga people, and warned that they could summon people from Sarupathar to burn the family’s vehicle.
They also allegedly claimed that Assam police could falsely implicate innocent citizens and have them imprisoned. The organisation alleged that the victim was forced to write his name and sign a document, while the video recording of the incident was deleted by the policemen.
Describing the allegations as a serious abuse of authority, AKK said no law enforcement personnel had the right to intimidate, threaten or humiliate citizens regardless of their community or place of origin.
In this regard, AKK has called upon the Assam government and senior Assam police officials to conduct an impartial and transparent inquiry, identify the personnel involved and take strict departmental and legal action if the allegations were found to be true.
AKK also urged the governments of Nagaland and Assam to ensure the safety of citizens travelling through border areas and uphold peace, mutual respect and the rule of law.
