AKM seeks clarification on digitisation of birth certificate

DIMAPUR: Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has sought clarification from the department of economics and statistics concerning digitisation of birth certificates and continued issuance of hard copies in various towns and villages. In a letter addressed to the district economics and statistics officer, Mokokchung, AKM vice president Bendangnangba and general secretary Aomayang Longkumer said the organisation had received reports that different towns and villages were charging varying amounts, ranging from Rs. 300 to Rs.600, for the issuance of birth certificates. The apex Ao student body also expressed concern that many villages appeared to be unaware of, or confused about, recent government order and procedures associated with digitisation process.
In this regard, AKM has urged the department to issue a detailed clarification on the prescribed fee structure and the process involved in obtaining birth certificates under the new system. Further, the organisation requested that, if the issuance of hard-copy birth certificates by village authorities was to be discontinued, the matter should be clearly communicated to all concerned authorities and the public. It said that such clarification would help ensure uniformity in implementation, prevent confusion and create greater public awareness regarding the proper procedure for obtaining birth certificates.
