SHILLONG, OCT 1 (NPN): Preparations are underway in Shillong for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit to present the President’s Police Colour—India’s highest ceremonial honour for a police force—to the Meghalaya Police on October 5.
Shah is scheduled to arrive in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong on October 4.
The Home Minister will present a ceremonial flag to the Meghalaya Police at the JN Sports Stadium in Polo Grounds, marking the official conferment of the prestigious President’s Colour award.
This prestigious honour, symbolised by a special flag, is popularly known as ‘Nishan’. In Hindi, it is known as ‘Rashtrapati ka Nishan’.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home Prestone Tynsong will also be present at the historic event.
There will also be a parade by different wings of the state police.
“For Meghalaya Police, the President’s Colour is not just a ceremonial honour—it is a recognition of decades of service, sacrifice, and steady, often unseen, work by thousands of personnel, many of whom will never be individually named for what they contributed,” Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang said.
“This recognition tells every member of the force that their work matters, and that the nation has taken notice. It further bolsters our resolve to work harder and serve better,” Nongrang explained.
In April 2026, President Droupadi Murmu approved the prestigious Police Colour award for Meghalaya Police in recognition of exceptional service, bravery, and professionalism.
Meghalaya Police was established on January 21, 1972, coinciding with the creation of Meghalaya as a separate state from Assam.
“Meghalaya Police deserved this distinction after decades of resilient service, modernisation, and success in tackling insurgency, cybercrime, and narcotics,” a senior Ministry of Home Affairs official said.
Shah will also lay the foundation stone for the construction of a new Shillong shooting arena.
Meanwhile, district authorities of East Khasi Hills have declared a three-kilometre radius around JN Stadium a No-Drone Zone from October 2 to 5.
District Magistrate Abhilash Baranwal said the restriction was imposed in view of the scheduled visit of the Union Home Minister and the presence of several VIPs and dignitaries at the prestigious President’s Colour ceremony.
