Amur Falcons still hunted in Wokha

Correspondent

In spite of the strict measures being implemented to deter the hunting of Amur Falcons, there were still instances in certain areas of Wokha district where some were engaged in the illegal practice of hunting the birds.

Especially during the evening hours when the birds descend on the roosting area in Wokha, to indulge in plentiful termite feeding grounds, some citizens can be witnessed shooting at the birds using catapults.

Hunting the birds becomes easier as the falcons fly at low altitude while feeding on the termites. The illegal practice is seen at certain locations of Wokha as termites are available in abundance.

However, a section of the district’s inhabitants have come out firmly against such an unethical and cruel act. They have appealed to the offenders to desist from participating in this heinous act.

Further, pedestrians also face a great deal of distress as they constantly worry about the potential of being struck by the catapults.
