DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has distanced itself from its former president, Katho P Awomi, following allegations linking him to vandalism at a bar and the alleged demand for money from bars in Dimapur.
ANCSU through its media cell said it had taken serious note of media reports regarding the incident, adding that the matter was under investigation by the competent law enforcement authorities. Condemning the alleged act, the union said that the reports had adversely affected the image, credibility and legacy of the union.
As a former president, ANCSU said Katho had once occupied a position of trust and responsibility, adding that any conduct inconsistent with the principles of integrity, discipline and accountability expected of student leaders inevitably reflected on the organisation.
To safeguard the dignity, reputation and institutional integrity of the union, ANCSU announced that Katho would not be invited, associated with or engaged in any ANCSU programme, activity or official function in any capacity until the matter was conclusively resolved through due process of law.
It said the decision had been taken solely to protect the credibility of the organisation and maintain public confidence in its leadership.
ANCSU also reiterated its concern over the continued operation of bars, restaurants and nightclubs engaged in the sale and consumption of alcohol despite the enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989. The union said the persistent and open violation of the law raised serious questions about its enforcement and had contributed to various social problems affecting the youth and student community. It called upon the commissioner of police Dimapur, and other competent authorities to immediately shut down bars, restaurants and nightclubs found violating the provisions of the NLTP Act and ensure strict and impartial enforcement of the law.
ANCSU warned that failure by the authorities to act decisively against such establishments would leave the union with no alternative but to launch appropriate democratic measures to uphold the rule of law and ensure public accountability.
The union maintained that its stand was guided not by prejudice against any individual or organisation but by its commitment to ethical leadership, respect for the rule of law, and the welfare of students and society.
