Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has condemned what it described as “unacceptable hostility” shown by people of Moava village on February 13 against the leadership of Chakhroma Public Organisation and accompanying officials who were present to maintain order.
In a condemnation note, ASU president Diezevisie Nakhro and general secretary Rajuselie Chucha stated that it was “deeply unfortunate and entirely uncalled for” that leaders and representatives of the administration, who had stepped in to mediate and resolve a conflict, were allegedly met with physical assault and injury. The union termed the act as aggression and said such behaviour was alien to Naga culture and land.
ASU asserted that the Naga homeland must remain a zone of peace and said it would not tolerate any community resorting to violence, whether against another tribe or among their own people. While stating that diplomatic solutions had always been valued, the union said the recent incident had crossed a line.
ASU cautioned that any further escalation would be viewed as a direct threat to regional stability and a challenge to established authorities. ASU also expressed support for the ultimatum served by Chakhroma Youth Organisation and urged the concerned parties to respect the timeframe and work towards restoring harmony.
While taking a firm stand against what it termed lawlessness, ASU said it believed in the strength of traditional systems to deliver justice and expressed hope that sincere efforts would be made to rectify the situation. The Union said it remained vigilant and expected that the law would prevail to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
ASU further stated that it would not allow any “myth to rewrite the history” of the people and reminded those residing in the homeland to be mindful of “who is who.”
