Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North) conducted a series of operations at various locations during the month of March and April.
Mon Battalion: Mon Battalion of Assam Rifles conducted an operation along with a police representative based on specific information in the general area of BP 151, Chenmoho, on April 2.
According to PRO during the operation, AR troops apprehended one NSCN (K) cadre along with 30 kani, 29 opium flowers, one mobile phone and Rs. 3,000 in cash. The apprehended was identified as Nokpho Konyak, age 37 years, son of late Manbo Konyak, resident of Choknyu village, Mon district.
The individual revealed that he was carrying the opium strips for NSCN (K) cadres at Shwelo and had been working as an OGW for the group. The apprehended along with the recovered items were handed over to Mon police station for further investigation.
Jalukie Battalion: Based on specific information about GPRN/NSCN cadres carrying out extortion activities in the general area of Athibung, Jalukie Battalion Assam Rifles launched a search operation along with a police representative on March 30.
According to AR, during the operation, Assam Rifles troops apprehended two GPRN/NSCN cadres Namdun Zeliang alias Don Zeliang, “regional administrative officer” and SS “lieutenant” Elijah alias Haisuibe Jeme who were involved in issuing house tax notices to extort money from local residents of the region. Recoveries from the individual included 20 extortion notices of house tax for the villagers signed by the “regional administrative officer” of the organisation and a diary containing details of GPRN/NSCN Zeliangrong region faction’s extortion money.
The Assam Rifles battalion also apprehended an individual identified as one NNC ‘sub lt’, Letinlen on March 29 at Old Chalkot, Village.
A separate press release from Assam Rifles said that on receiving information about “extortion activity”, Assam Rifles troops along with a police representative rushed to the site and nabbed the person.
All the apprehended individuals were handed over to Athibung police station along with the recovered items for further investigation.
