Barely a day after engaging in a gunfight with suspected insurgents, troops of Assam Rifles on Saturday recovered five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, averting what officials described as a “serious threat.”
According to official sources, the recovery was made during a routine patrol along the Pengpalep–Lokchao axis. Troops reportedly discovered an unusual underground structure, which upon search revealed five IEDs concealed inside a specially built bunker.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, Assam Rifles said a bomb disposal team was immediately deployed, which confirmed the devices were live and safely neutralized them. The area was subsequently sanitized.
The recovery came close on the heels of Friday’s exchange of fire between Assam Rifles personnel and suspected rebels near the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. between Saibol and Maringthel villages near border pillar no. 89.
At least four personnel of 3 Assam Rifles, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), sustained injuries in the firefight. The injured—Naik Subedar Shanker Ram, rifleman A. Rakesh, rifleman Sanjeev Kumar, and wireless operator Praveen Singh—are currently undergoing treatment at the military hospital in Leimakhong, Imphal.
Meanwhile, Mongmis Union, a collective of concerned citizens and community organizations, strongly condemned the attack on security forces near Saibol village. In a statement, the union termed the incident “reprehensible,” warning that such acts endangered both the lives of security personnel and innocent villagers.
The union urged authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation while appealing to all parties to refrain from actions that could escalate violence. “The people of Saibol/Yangoupokpi/Chanringphai deserve to live without fear of violence. We stand in solidarity with the casualties and the villagers affected by the attack,” the statement read.
Further, the union requested that the Army camp located within the village premises be shifted to a safer perimeter outside, citing concerns for civilian safety. It also called upon the government and security agencies to enhance protective measures and restore peace in the area.
