DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): The recent seizure of pistols from a ‘green card holder’ belonging to a particular group under ceasefire has raised concerns regarding compliance with the Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGRs).
According to official sources, the recovery was made during an operation in which the individual was allegedly involved in an illegal arms transaction. The matter is currently under investigation and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapons.
Under the CFGRs, designated members of ceasefire groups are issued identity cards and are permitted regulated movement under specified conditions. Official provisions allow a designated green card holder to be accompanied by one armed escort carrying a concealed weapon for personal security.
In view of these provisions, the recovery of multiple firearms from a designated card holder has drawn attention to possible violations of the ceasefire ground rules. Officials indicated that the investigation would ascertain whether the seized weapons were authorised and whether any provisions of the ceasefire mechanism had been breached. Security officials maintained that the investigation would focus on establishing the source of the weapons, the intended purpose of their possession and any possible links to illegal arms activities.
Authorities have not issued any statement suggesting institutional involvement by any ceasefire group, and the investigation remains confined to the facts of the case.
Official sources stated that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation and in accordance with the law and relevant ceasefire regulations.
The seizure has nevertheless highlighted the importance of strict adherence to the CFGRs and effective monitoring mechanisms to ensure that confidence-building measures under the ceasefire framework are implemented in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
