DIMAPUR, AUG 27 (NPN): African Swine Fever (ASF) has been confirmed in Kiruphema Bawe, Chiechama and Nerhema villages under Kohima district following positive laboratory test reports, prompting the district administration to impose restrictions on the movement of pigs and pork products.
According to a DIPR report, the deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima, B Henok Buchem, has declared a 1-km radius around the infected premises as an “Infected Zone” and a 10-km radius as a “Surveillance Zone.”
DC has prohibited export, import and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the designated zones with immediate effect. Further, pork markets and butchery shops operating within the affected areas have also been ordered to close.
Pig farmers have been advised to restrict visitors, disinfect farm premises daily and immediately report any unusual illness or mortality among pigs to the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services.
The order also directed that pig carcasses be disposed of through safe burial in accordance with prescribed protocols. Dumping carcasses in water bodies or open areas has been strictly prohibited.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing or consuming pork from unknown sources.
DC warned that violations of the directives would invite legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other applicable laws.
