Ashtalakshmi Darshan gives youth first-hand NER experience: Prof. Thong

DIMAPUR

Former pro vice-chancellor of NU, Prof. Glenn T. Thong delivered a special lecture at Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, on February 6 as part of the Ashtalakshmi Darshan Youth Exchange Programme.
As part of the youth exchange programme, NU is hosting 44 delegates from Ladakh and Kerala at the campus from February 1–14.
Delivering a lecture on “Inspiring Youth for the Journey Towards Viksit Bharat 2047”, Prof. Thong said the youth exchange programme provides participants with first-hand experience of the region’s rich traditions, languages and development through academic sessions, workshops, cultural exchanges and field visits.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the national vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat and contributes to the goal of Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
Quoting the President of India, Prof. Thong reminded students that “the next two decades is very important for a Viksit Bharat—the future of India lies in the hands of the youth.” He urged them to cultivate scientific temper, integrity and honesty, and to serve selflessly for the nation’s progress. He emphasised the responsibility of uplifting the less fortunate and adhering to moral values.
Prof. Thong also spoke about the rich history, languages, traditions, handlooms and agriculture of the Northeastern states, noting how indigenous communities have preserved their way of life despite rapid modernisation elsewhere. He described students as ambassadors for Viksit Bharat 2047, stressing the government’s commitment to engage youth in bridging gaps, sharing positive experiences and countering misconceptions about the Northeast.
Encouraging resilience and self-belief, he reminded students that obstacles are opportunities for growth. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S. Pavan, assistant professor, Department of Entomology, School of Agricultural Sciences, Medziphema Campus. It may be noted that Prof. Thong superannuated from the Department of Geology, Nagaland University, in 2025 after rendering outstanding contributions to the academic community, including serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Kohima Campus.
