Guwahati, Aug 16 (PTI): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday reviewed the party’s organisational activities and adopted a resolution to launch a statewide campaign against coal, stone and sand syndicates, blaming them for the recent floods in the state.
The meeting also reviewed the party’s preparedness for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election, autonomous council polls and municipal elections, besides taking stock of the APCC’s organisational structure. A separate review meeting of the APCC’s social media department was also held.
Party leaders discussed relief and rehabilitation work being carried out by district Congress committees and frontal organisations, including Seva Dal, Mahila Congress, Youth Congress and NSUI, in flood-hit areas of Upper Assam. According to an APCC statement, the discussions covered rebuilding damaged houses, cleaning public and religious institutions, ‘shramdaan’ to help schools resume classes, and providing paddy seedlings and direct assistance to farmers for transplantation. “The party adopted a resolution to launch a statewide mass awareness campaign against the coal, stone and sand syndicates, which it identified as the primary drivers of the recent disaster in Upper Assam,” it added.
The meeting also passed resolutions opposing the proposed reduction of the eco-sensitive zone around Kaziranga National Park from 10 km to 1 km and the acquisition of indigenous land at Engleng Pathar for handover to large corporate entities.
The Congress resolved to lead a mass movement to build public opinion against what it called “anti-people policies”.
Other issues discussed included a proposal for zonal training of Pradesh Congress workers, concern over appointments of RSS-affiliated individuals as vice-chancellors in Assam and other universities, and alleged preference to ideologically aligned candidates for college principal posts.
The leadership also noted “churn” among Gen-Z regarding the education system. A proposal to hold a state youth convention was approved.
