Assam lifts ban on transportation of live pigs

State animal husbandry & veterinary services (AH&VS) has informed that Assam government has lifted ban on transportation of live pigs subject to observance of relevant SOPs.
In a press release, AH&VS director informed that both individual health certificate (not more than 7 days between testing and loading in the wagons or trucks) and transit certificate (certifying the condition of transporting the animals are complied with) issued by officer not below the rank of assistant director, AH&VS from the point of origin.
Further, veterinary doctor, AH&VS Nagaland manning the inter-state check-gate would examine the pigs on arrival at the state border.
The release said concerned party should write to state government of the sourced animals to write to the governments of Nagaland and Assam informing that animals are free from African Swine Flu (ASF). The concerned party should also inform the OC of the respective police stations at the inter-state border at least 72 hours prior to the arrival of the animals.
The department informed that ASF is a viral disease of pig (swine), which has great effect on the economy of the piggery farmers due to high fatality of pig.
In view of this, strict adherence of SOPs is enforced while bringing live pigs from outside the state to prevent spread of ASF.
The department cautioned that concerned parties failing to comply with the SOPS would be dealt with stern action as per relevant Acts. Any persons interested in livestock trading could obtain detail SOPs from the directorate of AH&VS Nagaland during office hours.
