Assamese filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky’s dark comedy Moi Eti Nixhasor, which explores the life of a thief against the backdrop of Assam’s social and political realities, has been selected for screening at the Trujillo International Independent Film Festival in Peru.
The film has also earned a nomination in the Cinejoy Viewers Voice feature film competition in San Jose, California.
Kotoky, a National Award-winning filmmaker, said the selection for the upcoming festival in Peru was a proud achievement for the entire team behind the film. He added that Moi Eti Nixhasor would also be screened in the competition section of the Cinejoy Viewers Voice Film Festival. The event is an audience-based online film competition organised in partnership with the Conquest Film Festival, allowing viewers to determine the winners rather than relying solely on conventional industry gatekeepers.
The film has already received recognition at international film festivals, recently securing three awards at the California-based IndieFEST Film Awards and the Crown Point International Film Festival in Chicago.
Described as an exploration of resilience and moral ambiguity, the film centres on Koduwa, a clever village thief who finds his way through social unrest and prejudice with humour and compassion. Kotoky said the story ultimately leaves audiences with a question about who the real thief is. Earlier, Moi Eti Nixhasor won the Best Dark Comedy and Best Editor awards at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2026. It also received an Award of Excellence Special Mention at the Accolade Global Film Competition in the United States.
The lead character is portrayed by noted theatre actor Gunomoni Baruah, while several established and emerging actors from the Assamese film industry appear in supporting roles.
The film is based on a true story written by senior journalist Anuradha Sharma Pujari. It has been produced by the National Film Development Corporation in collaboration with production house Red River and Blue Hills. (Northeast News)
