ASU condemns alleged sexual assault of minor

DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by a 34-year-old church youth leader, reportedly from Kohima village.
ASU president Diezevísie Nakhro and general secretary Rajuselie Chücha described the act as “a grave violation of human rights and a devastating assault” on the innocence of a minor, which cannot be tolerated.
ASU said such acts had no place in the society and were contrary to the values and principles upheld by the community. It expressed concern over the involvement of a church leader, stating that places of worship were regarded as spaces of safety and trust.
Asserting that it maintains a zero-tolerance stance against all forms of exploitation and abuse, ASU stressed the need to protect young people from such offences. The union added that incidents of this nature not only traumatised victims and their families but also undermined public confidence in institutions entrusted with moral and spiritual leadership.
Acknowledging the arrest of the accused by law enforcement authorities, the union urged the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure that the case was properly pursued and justice is delivered in accordance with the law.
The union also called upon the relevant authorities to strengthen measures aimed at preventing crimes against women and children and to ensure accountability for offenders.
ASU expressed solidarity with the victim and her family and reaffirmed its support for their pursuit of justice.
