Continuing its efforts to safeguard the rights and identity of indigenous Nagas, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) on Wednesday conducted a phase-wise Inner Line Permit (ILP) vigil across Kohima town, during which 69 defaulters were detected.
In a press note, ASU president Diezevisie Nakhro and general secretary Rajuselie Chücha said that the drive revealed 47 individuals without valid ILP and 22 with invalid documents. All defaulters were handed over to the office of the Deputy Commissioner Kohima, for necessary action.
In response to numerous complaints regarding increasing violations of immigration laws, ASU said its volunteers actively participated in the initiative. The union expressed heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers for their dedication and civic spirit.
It said that during a similar exercise conducted on September 11, 2024, eight individuals without valid ILP were apprehended and reported to the district administration, with a request for stringent measures to curb the influx.
However, the union stated that the lackadaisical response from the concerned authorities has necessitated the continuation of such vigil exercises from time to time.
ASU called upon the public to remain vigilant, stressing that safeguarding the land was a “shared and enduring responsibility.” It also urged landowners to exercise caution when renting out their apartments or commercial spaces, and to ensure that no individual resides without valid documentation, particularly under the provisions of the ILP.
ASU also appealed to the district administration and law enforcement agencies to carry out regular checks and uphold the ILP framework diligently. It reiterated that ILP remains a vital safeguard for the indigenous population.
ASU said it remained steadfast in its commitment and encouraged the public to report any undocumented individuals to the concerned authorities or to the office of the union. Furthermore, ASU informed that similar drives will be conducted across all Angami-inhabited areas, in collaboration with the district administration, as part of its continued efforts to safeguard the interests of the Indigenous Naga community.
