ASUD, CSUD back stand against inclusion of non-Nagas in DMC

Ao Students’ Union Dimapur (ASUD) on Thursday extended its “unwavering support” to the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) stand against the inclusion of non-Nagas in the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).

In a press release, ASUD president Imnatemsu Pongen and general secretary Imnameren Walling appealed to the state government to uphold the rights of the Naga people and honour the sacrifices made by the predecessors, who laid down their lives to secure Article 371(A).

ASUD stated that inclusion of non-Nagas in the decision-making position would not only betray the trust placed in the leaders, but also posed a significant threat to Naga cultural identity and way of life.

The union has, therefore, urged the newly elected members of the DMC to prioritise the rights and identity of the Naga people. “It is imperative that they respect our sentiments and work towards maintaining peace and harmony within our state,” ASUD said, adding that the Naga community deserved representation that reflected their values, traditions and aspirations.

Further, ASUD affirmed to stand with the DNSU and called upon the state government to listen to the voices of the Naga people. ASUD also warned that any actions that undermined Naga rights or compromise Naga identity would not be tolerated. “Together, we will ensure that our heritage is preserved and that our voices are heard,” ASUD underlined.

CSUD: Chakhesang Students’ Union Dimapur (CSUD) has also affirmed oppose the inclusion of non-Nagas in Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). In a press release, CSUD president George Krome and general secretary Ashu Ritse affirmed that as a student body the union “fully stand” with the demand made by DNSU. CSUD stated that there were many qualified candidates among local people who could render their service towards the development of the Naga society.

The union reminded the state government not to undermine Article 371(A) which safeguards the unique identity and culture of the Nagas. CSUD has, therefore, urged the state government that the interest of the Nagas was prioritised to maintain peace and security.
