ATMA Sitimi Block, Kiphire District has formed a Commodity Interest Group (CIG) on January 23 at Nitoi Village on paddy cultivation.
At the programme, ATM Sitimi Block Lipokjungla Ozukum, explained that the main objectives behind the group approach was to establish a simple and farmer-oriented participatory extension mechanism which would enable the government to reach large number of farmers to empower the small farmers with limited resources. Lipokjungla stated that CIG is a self-managed, independent group of farmers with a shared goal and interest. She encouraged the farmers to work together to achieve on common goal by pooling their existing resources in gaining better access to the resources and to share the existing benefits.
It may be mentioned that seed money of Rs. 10,000 was given by ATMA for financing their initial start-up. Altogether a group of 15 women formed the CIG under paddy.
Earlier, the program was chaired by ATM, Sitimi Block, Nusakho. On January 24, ATMA staff, Kiphire District also conducted a field visit to large Cardamom farm at Sitimi Town wherein BTM, Sitimi Block Hokato Achumi, gave a brief training on importance of intercultural operations in cardamom farming.
He explained the importance of weeding during different months and spacing. Hokato also elucidated the importance and process of curing and precautions to be taken during the process for better quality capsules.
A brief demonstration was also given by Lipokjungla Ozukum on weeding, mulching and shade regulation. She also demonstrated how to dig the pit at recommended spacing. Altogether 15 beneficiaries attended the program and concluded with a vote of thanks from the GB of Sitimi.
