DIMAPUR, Oct. 19 (NPN): A two-day Atoizu Sports Meet 2026 organized by Kulolau Atoizumi Küqhakulu (KAK), kicked off on Monday, at the Police Complex and Nova Futsal, Chümoukedima, under the theme “Bound by Roots: United in Play”. The two-day sports meet features badminton and futsal.
The badminton inauguration at the Police Complex, Chümoukedima, was graced by secretary, Nagaland Khadi and Village Industries Board (NKVIB), Myghato Achumi, as the special guest, who informed that the organisation had been in existence for more than a decade but had not progressed as expected.
He said the organisation had considerable potential to guide and empower the people but needed to expand its activities beyond sports by organising seminars, workshops and training programmes to develop local skills and encourage self-reliance.
Achumi observed that such initiatives could help people sustain themselves and reduce unemployment, adding that organisations should focus on empowering communities rather than depending entirely on the government. He attributed the lack of progress partly to elected leaders being unable to devote sufficient time or provide the vision required to take the organisation forward.
Emphasising the importance of sports Achumi said sporting activities could contribute to both the mental and physical well-being of people while encouraging them to play a greater role in society.
Recalling the area’s sporting legacy, Achumi said Atoizu had been active in sports as early as 1968, when a team from the area represented Nagaland in the Santosh Trophy in Delhi. He said the region continued to have talented sportspersons but needed to identify, nurture and utilise their potential.
Achumi stressed the need for the organisation and community leaders to take concrete steps to revive the area’s former standing and create more opportunities for younger generations.
Meanwhile, the futsal tourney at Nova Futsal, Chümoukedima was kicked off by G.B., New Market and proprietor of AWSA private security, Khekishe Aye, as special guest, extended his best wishes to all the participating players and encouraged them to give their best while upholding the true spirit of sportsmanship. He emphasised that sports provided an important platform for people to come together, strengthen bonds and foster unity beyond individual differences.
He said sporting events such as the Atoizu Sports Meet helped bring people closer, promote teamwork and build mutual understanding among participants. He encouraged the players to compete with dedication, discipline and a positive attitude, while respecting their opponents and accepting both victory and defeat in the right spirit.
Aye also expressed hope that the meet would not only provide a platform for players to showcase their talents but also strengthen the sense of belonging and unity among the Atoizu community. He urged the participants to make the most of the opportunity and contribute towards building a stronger and more united community through sports.
The two-day meet in badminton will witness 55 plus men’s double, mix double, women’s double, open men’s double and 45 plus men’s double besides 13 teams will be competing at the futsal tourney.
