Austerity measures: Mizoram declares ‘No official vehicle day’

AIZAWL, MAY 21 (PTI): Mizoram government Thursday rolled out multiple austerity measures, including ‘No official vehicle day’ every Wednesday, staggered office timings and work-from-home to conserve fuel and cut expenditure amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.
The steps follow Prime Minister Modi’s appeal for reduced fuel consumption. State government employees have been encouraged to walk or use public transport. Work-from-home arrangements for 20 per cent of employees, though essential services such as healthcare, emergency response, water, power supply, transport, and law and order have been exempted. To further reduce traffic congestion and fuel usage, government offices will function in two shifts: agriculture, education, power, and general administration from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, while home, health, and disaster management from 10:30 am to 6 pm.
The government has asked departments to prioritise video conferencing, minimise official travel, discourage foreign trips, reduce vehicle convoys for ministers, adopt strict power-saving measures, and cut non-essential expenditure.
