Close on the heels of the DC Dimapur’s recent order on rate revision of auto rickshaw fares in Dimapur, as a consequence of several reductions in fuel prices, an association– ‘General Autorickshaw Drivers’ has rejected the downward revision on the plea that the same yardstick be applied on commercial vehicles (transport carriers, buses and taxis etc).
Genral Autorickshaw Drivers president Hokhuvi P. Aye and member Nramo Murry said they were not against the downward revision of auto fares decided by the Regional Transport Authority nor the district administration but felt that the same should also be done with prices of commodities that were raised directly or indirectly vis-à-vis fuel price.
They pointed out that hikes in fuel prices pushed up not only auto fares but also rates charged by commercial vehicles and consequently, the rise in prices of various commodities. Therefore, the two maintained that since rise in prices of commodities and rates of all commercial vehicles were affected, the reduction of prices and rates should also be applied uniformly on all. The GAD office bearers said that they would comply with the recent rate fixed by the authorities only when the downward revision of prices was also effected for all.
The two GAD office bearers also lamented that the authority had not done anything for the welfare of auto drivers, who had to pay not less than Rs.100 for various taxes daily in and around Dimapur town.
They said at this juncture of reduced fares, the auto drivers would have to continue with paying daily collection taxes, perform charity of giving concession to certain sections and at the same time, expected to live with the reduced earnings.
