Launching programme of “awareness campaign on solid waste management (Phase-2)” under the Asian Development bank assisted project and supported by State Investment Programme Management Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) was organized by Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) at Government High School Lower Chandmari Kohima, Saturday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the launching programme, secretary urban development department Imjung M Panger (IAS) observed that at the juncture, the town’s waste was “unscientifically and un-hygienically” dumped in a location about 12 kilometers away from Kohima.
In order to bring a change to this practice, he said a state of the art solid waste management plant was coming up below Lerie colony under the programme by Ministry of Urban Development government of India, funding of the Asian Development bank which he said was expected to be ready by the later part of this year.
Panger said that this facility would provide segregation of wet waste, dry waste and unrecyclable waste which in turn would be used in land field and as compost.
He informed that SIPMIU would be providing, free of cost, the colour coated segregation bin to each home and necessary trucks to all the wards about a month or so for which the orders are already being placed. Panger also said that urban local bodies would be empowered for certain key projects that would help in constructing individual toilets and community toilets.
He further encouraged the gathering to implement Swach Bharat Abhinaya- clean India mission and lauded KMC for involvement of the citizens in solid waste management.
The chief guest also launched a CD produced by state investment programme Urban Development under Asian Development Bank assisted project titled Styamev Jayate (Nagamese Version).
In the programme, status report of SWM pilot project was presented by sanitation convener Minister Hill (old), Lower Chandmari and Portlane.
Extension of awareness to new colonies was delivered by Panchayat Chairman/Sanitation convener Chandmari and welcome address was delivered by KMC administrator.
