CorrespondentKIPHIRE, JUN 13 (NPN)

In observation of World Day Against Child Labour, the Labour Department, District Child Protection Unit, and Child Helpline 1098 Kiphire organized an awareness program at GMS Longya Ward to educate people about child labour laws and the rights of children on June 12.
Labour Inspector K. Rothrongki Sangtam spoke about the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and the Nagaland Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Rules, 2024. He explained the jobs that are banned for children under 14, especially those in hazardous occupations. However, he mentioned certain exceptions, such as children helping in family businesses or audio-visual entertainment, as long as it does not affect their education and safety.
He encouraged students to focus on their studies and actively participate in school activities, reminding them that they are the leaders of tomorrow. He also urged them to share what they learned during the program with others.
Levi T. Aomi, Project Coordinator of Child Helpline 1098 Kiphire, spoke on the theme “Progress is clear, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts.” He explained the functions of Child Helpline 1098, which provides 24/7 support for children in distress and encouraged people to call whenever needed.
Meanwhile, to mark the day, a Child Labour Rescue Drive was conducted in public workplaces, garages, and shops, where workers and employers were made aware of child labour laws and the importance of protecting children’s rights.
