Awareness on child rights in Chümoukedima

A one-day awareness programme on child rights and protection was held on September 30 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Chümoukedima, organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) in collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit, Chümoukedima.
Delivering the keynote address, NSCPCR chairman Alun Hangsing highlighted the history of child rights and the role of stakeholders in safeguarding children’s welfare. He described children as the backbone of society and urged the younger generation to use technology wisely, while outlining various policies and legal frameworks under NSCPCR.
NSCPCR member Aying Wangsha spoke on the Right to Education (RTE), while member Akumla Longchari gave an overview of the POCSO Act, explaining its provisions and objectives in protecting children from sexual offences. Legal consultant Lichani Murry presented insights on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, focusing on rehabilitation and care for children below 18 years.
Deputy Commissioner Chümoukedima, Polan John, thanked NSCPCR for the initiative and encouraged more such programmes to raise public awareness.
District Child Protection Officer, Nikito Zhimomi, also shared a brief report on child-related issues in the district.
The programme was chaired by Child Helpline Project Coordinator, Mhaseto Rhakho, with welcome address by Social Welfare and NSCPCR secretary Yongchingkumla, and vote of thanks by Child Welfare Committee chairperson Esther K. Aye.
Altogether, 168 participants attended the programme, which also featured an interactive session.
