Kohima District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), under the aegis of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and in collaboration with Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Kohima, conducted a three-phase legal awareness programme on the Consumer Protection Act 2019.
According to a press release, the programme aimed to educate the public on consumer rights, duties, and legal procedures.
The first phase was held on June 10 at Stella Higher Secondary School. Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Kohima, Shiekhozo, delivered the keynote address, stressing the importance of knowing one’s rights as a consumer. District & Sessions Judge and Kohima DLSA chairman, Duvelu Vero, followed with an in-depth presentation on the Act.
The second phase took place at Khiamniungan Baptist Church, Kohima, on June 21. Panel lawyer Viliezonuo Rhetso spoke on consumer rights, responsibilities, and complaint procedures. The third phase was held at Tseminyu Town on June 23, where chief judicial magistrate and Kohima DLSA secretary, Cheliam Khiamniungan, gave an overview of the Act.
The speakers highlighted Section 2(7) of the Act, defining a consumer as someone who buys goods or avails services for personal use, not for resale or commercial gain. They also discussed Section 2(9), which outlines basic consumer rights, including the right to safety, information, choice, redressal, and education.
The programme also explained how and who can file consumer complaints—ranging from unfair trade practices to misleading advertisements—and encouraged the public to make informed decisions.
