An awareness program on consumer rights was organised by Nagaland State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NSCDRC) in collaboration with Nagaland State Bharat Scouts & Guides at State Training Centre, Nerhema, Kohima on June 29.
NSCDRC president, Justice S. Hukato Swu in his introductory speech said consumer awareness was an important part of the commission as every citizen being a consumer was entitled to know and learn about everything they consumed. He informed that consumer courts were available in every district and anyone can approach for any kind of issue faced by the people.
Hukato also informed that there will be no fees for edible commodities below Rs. 5 lakh and the court can be approached for medical issues and medical negligence. He assured that the commission was ready to help anytime when a consumer faced problems. Hukato also mentioned the importance of creating more awareness for the public to know their rights and responsibilities as everything has been commercialized. He further appealed the Bharat Scouts and Guides to spread awareness to the public on consumer rights.
Speaking on e-commerce: Liabilities & Mediation, advocate Sunjeb Rana highlighted that online services have become convenient however, it invites problem because of online scams and frauds. Rana therefore cautioned the customer to be aware of their rights and what the product was offering.
Advocate Apila Sangtam, who spoke on overview of the Consumer Act said that the act was to provide protection of the interest of consumers and to make provisions for the establishments of authorities and settlement on consumer disputes and the matters connected therewith.
Advocate Sentiyanger Pongen, spoke on medical negligence and mentioned cases of mal practices and wrong medical procedures.
He cautioned consumer to be careful while using electronic gadgets and be more careful with advertisements. The program was attended by150 Scouts and Guides from all over Nagaland. Earlier, NSBS&G state secretary, Er. Thepfuzakie Angami, delivered the welcome address and guide captain, Pearly Shohe chaired the program. NSCDRC registrar (acting), Rüguozelie Paphino delivered the vote of thanks.
