As part of the 100-day SANKALP-HEW campaign, district administration, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima, conducted an awareness session on women-centric legislations with the Ferrando Domestic Worker’s Organization on September 3 at D’Block Kohima.
In a press release by DHEW, Kohima informed that T & A Law Chambers, Kohima, Advocate Thejasenuo Vitsu, explained the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, emphasizing that it covers both physical and mental abuse. She highlighted how financial dependence can increase women’s vulnerability and outlined the reliefs and punishments provided under the Act.
She mentioned that the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 aims to create a safe work environment for women by preventing and protecting sexual harassment, and detailed the remedies available under the Act.
She detailed the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act of 1956, which criminalizes and penalizes prostitution and the trafficking of women and girls. In addition to these Acts, she also gave a brief introduction of some other acts which promotes the rights of women and children like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.
She mentioned several schemes available to women, including One Stop Centre, Women Helpline 181, Swadhar Greh, Ujjwala, and Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana.
Earlier, the program was chaired by DHEW, Kohima, Gender Specialist, Kesoneinuo, vote of thanks by Ferrando Domestic Worker’s Office, Kohima, Incharge, Sr. Rincy Kamei.
