DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN): Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has strongly condemned the reported rape and sexual abuse of a minor girl by her biological father in Kohima district, which allegedly resulted in her pregnancy, and called for swift legal action against the accused.
In a press release, AWO described the incident as an appalling crime and a grave violation of the child’s dignity, safety and fundamental rights.
The organisation said a father was expected to provide love, protection and security, adding that the alleged abuse represented a deeply disturbing betrayal of parental trust and responsibility.
Stating that no child should have to endure such trauma, particularly at the hands of someone entrusted with her care, AWO said the alleged crime must be dealt with firmly under the law.
The apex Angami women body noted that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, provided a stringent legal framework to protect children from sexual abuse, exploitation and assault.
AWO urged the responsible authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation and take stringent legal action under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and other applicable laws.
The organisation also called for the minor to be provided with medical care, psychological counselling and all necessary support to help her recover from the trauma. AWO stressed that her privacy, dignity and identity must be protected at every stage.
AWO said society must stand firmly against all forms of sexual violence and break the silence that often allows such crimes to remain hidden.
Emphasising that child protection was a collective responsibility, the organisation said there could be no justification or tolerance for such acts. AWO asserted that the survivor deserved compassion, justice and unwavering support while the accused must be held accountable in accordance with the law.
