DIMAPUR: Balidan Diwas 2026 was observed at the Multi Utility Hall, Gorkha Public Panchayat Complex, Chandmari, Kohima, on August 25 evening to honour the supreme sacrifices of Major Durga Malla and Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse.
The programme was organised by Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) in association with Gorkha Nagas, clubs, and Jatiya Sansthas.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, said Martyrs’ Day was not merely an occasion for remembrance but also a time for reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to the values for which the martyrs laid down their lives.
He reminded that the freedoms, peace and opportunities enjoyed today were built on the sacrifices of countless men and women who placed duty and nation above personal interests.
The DC highlighted the Gorkha community’s long tradition of courage, discipline, loyalty and service, acknowledging its contributions to the defence and security of the country as well as to the social, cultural and economic life of Nagaland, particularly Kohima.
He urged the younger generation to draw lessons from the lives of martyrs and cultivate values of discipline, integrity, compassion, courage and respect for fellow citizens.
Maintaining that the strongest tribute to martyrs would be to build a society that is peaceful, responsible, inclusive and just, Buchem called for greater unity, communal harmony and mutual respect among communities in Kohima and Nagaland.
Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Cooperation Department, Nagaland, Bharati Chinhal, and Neisielie Kenguruse, father of late Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, also exhorted the gathering.
Earlier, GPPK president Santu Thapa delivered the welcome address, while Karishma Baraily presented a special musical number. GPPK advisor Ranjeet Lama delivered the vote of thanks.
