Baptist College Kohima observes 10th cultural day

Baptist College Kohima observed its 10th Cultural day on the theme “Cultural Diversity: Finding One’s Identity and Unity in Language, Attire and Food” at the college premises, here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the programme, associate professor & head, department of Tenyidie, NU, Dr. Mimi Kevichüsa Ezung said indigenous writers did not enjoy the same respect as English writers. She said majority of the translation of forefathers were done in English, which should be broken and restoration of native language should be encouraged.
Speaking on “Reclaiming the indigenous Language of Nagaland”, she pointed out that indigenous language authors were productive, however nothing was being done to encourage publication in one’s native language. She pointed out that such authors required support from government and that the state needed prolific authors involved in native writing, proactive publishers, facilitative media and interactive audience.
Award recipient for promoting Naga Cuisine, Rovi Chase said when it comes to food, due respect was not given as compared to attire, language and music.
In his opening remark, Culture Study Centre convener, Kezhalielhou Zatsu said food acted as means of cultural exchange while language acted as a cultural signifier.
Meanwhile, principal of the college, Dr. Kekuchol Pusa stated that Nagas were in a very vulnerable stage with advancement of technology and globalisation. He said the only way to preserve their culture and to connect was by “documentation”.
The programme was chaired by asst prof, Süvilü Venuh, Chaplin Tamreimung Chüsi said the prayer while rapporteur was member, Culture Study Centre, Baptist College, Dr. Sentinaro and vice principal, Sechü Campus Dr. Kewepfuzu Lohe proposed vote of thanks.
Highlights of the programme included folk dances from Yimkhiung and Konyak Students Troupe, inauguration of food stalls of all tribes, students participating in the narrative “Mother tongue”.
