BCK & SC organize Cultural Day

Baptist College Kohima (BCK) and Sechü Campus (SC) observed its 9th Cultural Day under the theme, “Our culture, our values”, with Dr. Anungla Aier, director, department of Higher Education as guest speaker on February 1 at Ura Academy Hall, Kohima.

A press release by BCK Culture Study Centre convenor, Dr. Vizovono Elizabeth stated that Dr. Anungla Aier, speaking on cultural values, pointed out that culture could be conceptualized as a man-made environment and that it forms the foundation on which values are grounded. Values, she said, could be seen from two levels, individual and collective values, where Nagas promote community based cultures unlike western culture which, she said, was individualistic. According to Dr. Aier, culture determines perception and shapes behaviours and attitudes. So, change in culture should not mean forgetting one’s cultural roots.

Dr. Vizovono Elizabeth, chaired the program and gave brief insights into the aims, objectives and purpose for the establishment of the Culture Study Centre in Baptist College, set up in 2003.

Highlights of the program included various performances from students. The winners of the essay competition on the topic “Merits and demerits of social media on our culture,” held prior to the event, were declared. Earlier pastor Kedo Peseyie offered the invocation and later, Dr. Kewepfuzu Lohe said the closing prayer.
