DIMAPUR: Akehda Amulung, Kiphire, organised the inaugural Beekeeping Training Programme for Livelihood Promotion at Shishimi Village, Kiphire district, on September 26. The programme was funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) and moderated by Irothe T. Sangtam, CEO, Akehda Amulung.
The programme began with an invocation led by pastor SVBL, followed by a welcome address from the Village Council chairman (VCC), Shishimi, who expressed the village’s positive response to the initiative. He said the training, being the first of its kind in the village, would become an important part of its history and looked forward to a long term partnership with the organisation.
In his address, Longtili C. Sangtam, founder of Akehda Amulung, thanked the Village Council, Church, SHGs and villagers for their participation, noting that their presence reflected commitment to learning and livelihood improvement. He said beekeeping has the potential to contribute to the local economy and urged beneficiaries to make full use of the training opportunity. He assured continued support from Akehda Amulung, including assistance in marketing products, and described beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood activity that could foster entrepreneurship and self reliance. He also expressed confidence in Irothe T. Sangtam for leading the project and extended gratitude to NEC for supporting the initiative.
Head GB of Shishimi Village thanked Akehda Amulung for introducing the programme, noting that Shishimi was already known for traditional basket making. A briefing on beekeeping was delivered by Zukhathong N, covering bee colonies, hive management, honey production and the importance of proper care and handling. Participants were introduced to the potential of beekeeping as a sustainable source of income. A practical demonstration was conducted to provide hands on experience in bee rearing and hive management.
The event brought together village leaders, church representatives, SHGs, beneficiaries and community members, marking the beginning of a livelihood initiative aimed at promoting sustainable income generation through beekeeping in Shishimi Village.
