Bendang Jamir to represent India at Badminton World Sr C’ship in Thailand

DIMAPUR

Bendang Jamir, also known as Bendangnukshi, from Mopungchuket village in Mokokchung District, will represent India in the 70+ age category at the upcoming Badminton World Senior Championship organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The event will be held in Pattaya, Thailand, from September 7–14, 2025.
At 80 years of age, Jamir remains a remarkable figure in Indian sports. A veteran athlete, he has previously competed in the World Senior Championships held in Ankara (Turkey) and Jeonju (South Korea), and is a regular in the Indian team for both international and national veteran tournaments. Earlier this year, he secured third place in the 70+ category at the Indian Masters National Badminton Championship held in Goa.
Jamir’s sporting journey began not in badminton, but on the football field. In 1968, he was part of the Government High School Mokokchung team that finished runners-up in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament in New Delhi. He later captained the first-ever football team representing North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 1974.
Known for his enduring fitness and mental sharpness, Jamir continues to inspire younger generations with his philosophy: “Health is the biggest prize.” Apart from playing badminton, he stays active through farming and community work. He also serves as an Advisor to the Nagaland Registered Class-1 Contractors Union (NGRC-1CU) and remains a respected elder in his community.
Jamir is the son of Late Sobulepden and Late Chubasenla, holds a B.A. from NEHU, Shillong, and currently resides in Dimapur. He is married to Helena Aier and is a proud father of two children and grandfather to four.
