The biography of N. Bendang Ao, titled “Masetshilung: Man of Principle”, was formally launched on September 13 by Ao Naga elder Rev Dr L. Kari Longchar, former Executive Secretary of Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM), at a solemn event that celebrated the life and legacy of one of Nagaland’s most respected public figures.
Authored by noted writer and community chronicler Tiala Imchen, the book traces the journey of N. Bendang Ao—from his humble beginnings to his pioneering role in establishing the Northeast Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) at Dimapur, and his lifelong service as a government servant, church volunteer, and community elder.
Rev Kari, who was once a student of N. Bendang at Clark Memorial School, described him as “courageous, truthful and wise,” and a man who exemplified Christian values in both public and personal life. He recalled N. Bendang’s leadership as president of Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) in 1964, particularly his efforts to initiate dialogue between the church and youth on matters of religion and culture.
Speaking at the launch, author Tiala Imchen shared that the title Masetshilung was chosen to reflect N. Bendang’s purpose-driven life. She recounted stories of his early struggles, including manual labour to support his family, and his unwavering commitment to education and community service. “He stood firm in truth and selflessly served his people,” she said.
The event featured tributes from several prominent personalities. Rev Dr Wati Aier described him as “a man of distinction” whose public service was marked by integrity and compassion.
Athriba Sangtam, Pastor of Tsarü Baptist Church, remembered his deep connection with the Sangtam community and his contributions to the church. Former MP K. Asangba Sangtam noted how the Longkumer family was embraced as part of the Tsarü village, reflecting N. Bendang’s inclusive spirit.
Entrepreneurs Associates CEO Neichute Doulo recalled his mentorship and kindness, while Joshua Lorin, principal of Oriental Theological Seminary (OTS), hailed him as a founding pillar of the institution. Lorin noted that N. Bendang was one of only two individuals honored as Life Patrons of OTS for his visionary leadership and sacrificial commitment.
The launch was chaired by Dr Alongla P. Aier, Professor of English & Communication, who remarked, “Legacy is not about leaving something for people; it’s about leaving something in people—and through this book, his legacy lives on.”
The biography includes personal accounts and reflections from colleagues, friends, and community leaders, offering a comprehensive portrait of a man whose life continues to inspire across generations and cultures.
