BJP member murdered in Tripura; mob sets accused’s house on fire

Agartala, Jun 23 (PTI): A BJP member was allegedly murdered in West Tripura district, following which an angry mob set fire to the house of one of the accused, police said on Tuesday.
The victim, Samir Das, was also the secretary of a local club at Kathaltali. He was hit on the head with a spade around midnight when he was returning home after attending an invitation, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak said.
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder, he said, adding that the motive behind the crime was being investigated.
Locals claimed that those behind the attack were also known in the area as BJP members.
After Das’s blood-soaked body was found, a group of women attempted to attack the house of the elder brother of one of the accused. Police and CRPF personnel prevented them from entering the premises, the SP said.
Hours later, hundreds of villagers gathered outside the house and set it on fire. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and brought the blaze under control, he said.
“The situation is under control now,” the SP said.
The families of the two accused have been shifted to a safe location in view of public anger over the killing, Amatali police station officer-in-charge Paritosh Das said.
