DIMAPUR, SEP 28 (NPN): State BJP president Benjamin Yepthomi on Monday said grassroots party workers had demanded that the BJP contest all 60 seats in the forthcoming State Assembly election, with the representation forwarded to the party’s central leadership for a final decision.
Asked about the demand, Yepthomi said Mandal presidents, district presidents and grassroots workers had met him and conveyed their desire for the BJP to contest all 60 seats.
He said the BJP had around 2.6 lakh karyakartas across villages, towns and districts, covering 2,361 polling stations, adding that as State party president, he could not stifle their democratic aspirations.
Yepthomi said he had accepted the representation and forwarded the sentiments of the grassroots workers to the party’s central leadership.
“The final decision is now up to the central leadership,” he said.
He stressed that political parties and their workers were entitled to have their own aspirations, while acknowledging that the NDPP, as a regional party, also had its own political ambitions.
Concluding the press conference, Yepthomi said the BJP would continue to focus on grassroots organisation, development and public service, asserting that voters were not won through rumours but through trust.
“India’s democracy is bigger than Rahul Gandhi, bigger than Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bigger than Home Minister Amit Shah, and bigger than both the BJP and the Congress,” he said, adding that the voter was supreme and the mandate of the Indian voter must always be respected.
