NEW DELHI, JUN 17 (IANS): Indian boxers continued their strong run at the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) in China, with Nikhil, Deepak, and Saneh advancing on Day 3. Nikhil dominated Brazil’s Kelvy Trindade in the men’s 55kg category with a 5-0 unanimous decision, while Deepak impressed in the 70kg division, defeating Japan’s Sewon Okazawa, a 2025 World Championships silver medallist, also by 5-0. In the women’s 65kg, Saneh battled past South Korea’s Seon Sujin 4-1. However, Malsawmtluanga (80kg) lost 1-4 to Jordan’s Ashaish Hussein, and Mahi Lama (60kg) fell 0-5 to Mongolia’s Monkhor Namuun.
Earlier, on Day 2, India had mixed results. Prachi impressed in the women’s 57kg category, defeating USA’s Deborah Grant 5-0, while Jyoti and Nikhil also advanced. Poonam (54kg) and Akash (75kg) suffered narrow 2-3 defeats, while Gitimoni bowed out 0-5 against France’s Maelys Richol.
Looking ahead, Day 4 will see Minakshi (51kg) face Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska, and Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) clash with Kyrgyzstan’s Mirzokhid Imamnazarov. India’s campaign remains promising, with several boxers progressing deep into the tournament despite tough international competition.
